The Brethren - John Gisham

I don't read a lot of John Grisham books, but the ones that I have read have always been good page turners, especially on long journeys or gigs with lots of downtime... I downloaded The Brethren onto my Kobo Reader and I really enjoyed it, so much so I bought another one of his books.

The story is all around a minimum-security federal prison in Florida, were three disgraced former judges—dubbed “The Brethren”—spend their days holding mock trials in the prison law library and running an ingenious extortion racket. Posing through personal ads as vulnerable young men, they lure wealthy, closeted targets into compromising pen-pal relationships, raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars with the help of their outside lawyer.

Meanwhile, in Washington, the ruthless director of the CIA is quietly engineering a dark-horse U.S. senator’s meteoric rise to the presidency to secure massive defense spending.

The two worlds disastrously come together when the judges’ mail-scam inadvertently hooks the CIA-backed presidential candidate. Suddenly, three convicts find themselves in the crosshairs of the nation’s most dangerous intelligence apparatus, igniting a tense game of blackmail, paranoia, and survival.

And so it goes. Some say his books are a bit predictable, but I don't mind. He's doing something right as a few of his books have been turned into successful movies, so there!
