Living on the Isle of Wight does have some advantages. Being a holiday destination it does have some lovely places to visit and to spend some time. More so as we visited the Mermaid Distillery, and had a great afternoon sipping their finest on their terrace.
The Mermaid Distillery is not quite what you'd expect, nor is the location. This rather unassuming, but charming pub called the Wishing Well on the Isle of Wight, not far from Ryde, has at the back, a small but constantly productive distillery.
You must try (if you're not driving) the excellent value flight of 4 gins, a rum and a vodka, served with a small bottle of tonic for 10 quid.
We had a fantastic afternoon on the terrace at the back trying them all neat, then trying them again with a splash of the tonic. Each one superb. £42.00 for a 700ml bottle of gin may seem expensive, but once you get it home, pour some into a glass of ice, you well then realise that in fact, its not to expensive at all. We bought a short run bottle of their Winter Gin. Fabulous...
In all a great location, excellent drinks, excellent afternoon... Hic...!
We got the bus back to Ryde, Of course...
