Comments: Jack Reacher is a fictional character who is a former military policeman and the main protagonist in a series of thriller novels by author Lee Child. He is known for his strength, intelligence, and sense of justice.
You don’t need to read the first Jack Reacher book (“Killing Floor”) to understand the character or enjoy most of the series. Here’s why:
-
Each novel stands alone. Lee Child designed the Jack Reacher books so any one can be picked up and enjoyed without prior knowledge.
-
Reacher’s character stays consistent. He rarely changes or develops in the traditional sense; he’s a drifter, ex-military police officer, and his backstory is re-explained in many of the books.
-
Little ongoing storyline. There’s no big, overarching plot across the series—just the occasional returning side-character or the odd reference you’d easily catch up on.
That said, if you start with “Killing Floor,” you’ll get a strong introduction to Reacher’s style and personality. But if you have another book in the series on hand, feel free to start there!
In Lee Child's In Too Deep (co-written with Andrew Child), Jack Reacher wakes up injured and handcuffed in a hospital room with no memory of the car crash that preceded his capture. He's caught in a web of conspiracy involving a criminal crew, abandoned Russian-owned homes, a large sum of money, and a secret called the "Russian job". Reacher must fight to regain his memory, form alliances with a detective with her own agenda, and navigate a world where nothing is as it seems to uncover the truth and escape the unfolding danger.
